Debbie Murphy

Instructor/ Centered Riding Specialist

Since being introduced to Centered Riding in 2009, Deborah has been extremely enthusiastic about Centered Riding and all it entails. Deborah finds that Centered Riding principles help any and all horse related endeavors. “Whatever your discipline, Centered Riding enhances it!” Centered Riding is used successfully by riders and instructors of all ages, interest, and levels. It can be applied to any type of horse or horsemanship. Most of all, it makes riding more enjoyable for horses and riders.  Centered Riding extends across all disciplines and anyone who rides can benefit from a lesson. Deborah is available to teach any riders interested in Centered Riding.

While stationed in Maine in the early 1980′s as an Air Traffic Controller for the United States Air Force, Deborah was introduced to Dressage and has continued to study Dressage to this day.  She has competed successfully through Second Level. Deborah obtained her USDF Associate Instructors status in 2009, having met the requirements (teaching, riding, lunging horses and riders) in a series of USDF Instructor workshops.  Deborah finds it very helpful to reference the USDF Training Pyramid as the path to correct riding and training and uses an “exercise” based teaching and training approach, which helps to give students tools they can use when training on their own.

Deborah became a Level I Centered Riding Instructor in 2010 after attending a Centered Riding Instructors Course with Level IV Centered Riding Instructor Deborah Moynihan.  Ms. Moynihan studied directly with the originator of Centered Riding, Sally Swift.  Deborah continues to train with Ms. Moynihan and is in the process of obtaining her Level II certification.

Deborah sincerely believes in the benefit of the Centered Riding Instructor providing “hands on bodywork” to assist in alignment, loosening and awareness of how it is possible for the rider to effect the horse in a helpful manner.

Deborah’s teaching style focuses on the individual rider and horse and what will help them progress in an enjoyable and safe way. Deborah is happy to work with riders of all abilities and has had great success with increasing rider confidence. Deborah is VERY positive, believing that the rider needs to know when they are “heading in the correct direction”.

Deborah has been involved with the Connecticut Equestrian Center since 2007 in some capacity, including boarding her own horse of over 10 years, Shadow Dancer, training with Sarah Geikie, showing, judging, and encouraging others to show at Connecticut Equestrian Center’s friendly shows, and providing lessons as a Centered Riding Instructor.

When asked about her inclusion as an instructor at CEC, Deborah said, “Over the years I have enjoyed all the wonderful improvements to this marvelous facility, and I am extremely pleased to join the members of the CEC team of professionals.
